Microsoft moves 18 million Kinect sensors

Here's a fun little tidbit from tonight's Seacrest-heavy Microsoft Keynote: turns out that Redmond has moved 18 million Kinect sensors in just over a year, according to the Steve Ballmer's numbers.

The good news is it’s definitely a sequel, there’s old things and new things, much better detection as stated and much more content. If you were to choose between this edition and last year’s edition, I would definitely recommend this one, there’s nothing in Your Shape Fitness Evolved that isn’t in here. Ubisoft seemed to spend time on its pride and joy to make sure it succeeds and it probably will. If you’re a fitness freak, this is probably a game you want, although there are things that I still like about EA Sports Active 2.0 that aren’t offered here.

Kinect Sports Season 2 Calorie Estimates

Kinect Sports Season 2 is now available and perfect for fitness gamers. Unlike the first Kinect Sports, your calorie burned estimates are integrated directly into the game. After you complete a game, you are shown your estimated calories burned for that particular game and for your whole session of playing. We are still hoping for a calorie specific add-on, like the excellent one they made for Kinect Sports.

Trainer isn’t perfect: its interface can be touchy at times, and form isn’t emphasized as much as it could be. (If you do take up real MMA, you won’t want to have to unlearn bad habits.) But I love how it combines hard training and unapologetic difficulty with the real-life personalities who serve as your trainers: much like the gymnastics coaches who saw me through days of torn palms and taped shins, this tough-love attitude kept me focused and on track. Getting in shape with Kinect never hurt so good.

Doctors use Xbox in operating rooms: How?

Health care professionals may have a new tool in their life-saving arsenal: an Xbox.
Doctors at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto are using the Xbox Kinect gaming system to solve hygiene problems that typically plague the operating room. And if Microsoft's vision comes true, it can revolutionize the health care industry.
Maintaing a clean and germ-free operating room is often the biggest challenge hospitals face.

"The problem is that doctors sometimes have to step in and out of the sterile field to gather additional information on the state of a patient in surgery," Denise Amrich, a registered nurse and health care advisor for the U.S. Strategic Perspective Institute wrote on ZDnet. And that means doctors have to rescrub once they're finished reviewing scans, adding delays and risks to inherently risky procedures.

Enter the Xbox Kinect.

With a program designed by a hospital engineer, Sunnybrook's doctors use the gaming device to review imaging scans right from the operating room. Before, they'd have to work from memory, or leave the room entirely to review the information.

"We're able to bring that computer as if it was the last member of our team, into the working field of the operating room," Dr. Calvin Law, liver cancer surgeon at Sunnybrook said in a hospital-produced video.

And a clean operating room is just the beginning.

CNET reported that Microsoft's chief research and strategy officer, Craig Mundie, told a medical conference in June that Kinect technology can revitalize health care. He envisions patients one day can attend group therapy sessions with other patients and doctors behind the anonymous guise of an avatar that mimics a person's movements and facial expressions.

"The fact that it's anonymous and not really you has value," Mundie said in an interview after the speech. He said an avatar would show if a person is sitting arms crossed, disinterested, furrowing his brows, and doctors can follow-up on those signals of depression, just as they would if a patient was right in front of them.

Dr. Law is already seeing the benefits from using this technology in his hospital

"For all surgeries we do today, really, image guidance is a key to helping the surgeon." He said. "It's like having a GPS for your car now."

Ubisoft has announced Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012, the sequel to last year's calorie-crunching Kinect launch title due for release exclusively on Xbox 360 this November.

The trailer for the new fitness game asks for the community to burn one billion calories together, suggesting that the game may support some sort of community/social network integration.

At the time of writing, however, further details on Fitness Evolved 2012 were still to be released. Judging by the name expect the series to become an annual franchise, though.
